Asthma Initiatives
National and State Initiatives: Non-Governmental Organizations
- Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJ). RWJ has four program offices through which it provides
grants for the study of asthma: (1) University of Michigan
School of Public Health; (2) Center for Health Care
Strategies, Inc. in Princeton, NJ; (3) American Academy
of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, Inc. in Milwaukee,
WI; and (4) The George Washington University, The Center
for Health and Health Care in Schools, Washington,
D.C. This site is searchable by topic and provides
list of grants, grant reports, national program office
information, reports from national program offices
and publications.
- Allies Against Asthma: $9.5 million to 7 communities across the nation to
improve prevention, management and care of asthma
through a combination of clinical and public health
approaches. Initiative is managed by the University
of Michigan School of Public Health.
- Asthma MOMs: Independent reliable
information about asthma. Includes broad information
on variety of topics, medical literature, information
on legislation, asthma product evaluation, articles,
videos (also in Spanish), assessment tools, air forecast,
tips on traveling and links to other sites.

Asthma Treatment Programs for Patients with Asthma, National Jewish Medical and Research Center, Denver, CO. Has day and in-patient programs for local and out-of-town patients.
- Breatherville, Mothers of Asthmatics, Institute of Allergy,
Asthma and Immunology: Site contains information
and links to all aspects of asthma prevention, education,
and management.
- Childhood Asthma Initiative (CAI), Allergy
and Asthma foundation, Southern
California Chapter: The
goals of the Childhood Asthma Initiative are to decrease
asthma morbidity and improve the quality of life
of children with asthma less than 5 years of age. The
project provides no-cost intervention and treatment
services to children age 0-5 with asthma who live
in downtown and South Central Los Angeles.
- The Children’s Health Fund The
Children’s Health Fund is a national network
of pediatric health programs. Funded through an
unrestricted grant from the Schering-Plough Corporation,
the initiative’s primary goal is to empower
families to manage their children’s asthma.
- Consortium on Children’s Asthma Camps: Find an asthma camp in your state or elsewhere. Also
has links to Asthma Action Plan, an Asthma Camp Activities
Manual (with information and tools for assessment and
management of asthma), an Asthma Camp Tool Kit (a manual
on how to plan, establish and market an asthma camp, along
with medical considerations and tools), and links to
other asthma sites.
- Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA),
sponsored primarily by pharmaceutical companies to
raise awareness of asthma, improve the identification,
management and treatment of asthma, increase access
to asthma therapies and reduce morbidity and mortality
of asthma world-wide.
- PBS, Hooray for Health! Hooray
for Health! is a health curriculum guide designed
for teachers, after-school providers, and school
nurses. Each unit explores a different early childhood
health topic, offering background information, a
featured ARTHUR show, classroom activities, recommended
books, and family activity sheets in English, Spanish,
Chinese, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.
